President Trump said he would plow ahead with new tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday, as expected, in the a broadside against the two biggest US trading partners that underscores his push to remake global trade.

The term “protectionism” is generally treated as a pejorative in the economic world, akin to “isolationism” and “populism”. In an era where globalism is treated as the end-all-be-all of social and geopolitical evolution, the idea of taking a step back and reconsidering the notion of independence and self reliance is abhorrent.
